About Heinrich Schliemann's Life and Work

The exhibition The Stuff of Legend: Heinrich Schliemann’s Life and Work. Celebrating the Bicentennial of his Birth commemorates the bicentennial of Schliemann’s birth (1822-2022) drawing inspiration from his vast archive at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. Correspondence, official documents, his published works, ephemera, and photographs highlight the depth and breadth of Schliemann’s public, professional, and private life. Episode 1: Making the Schliemann Papers Accessible to the Public

“It was only yesterday that I visited your web page and found the files with great joy. Their quality is amazing! The scans are very helpful for all of us, who are not so lucky to be able to work in the Gennadius Library constantly…,” commented one of our users in 2011, when we first started uploading Schliemann’s papers to our website.

In the first episode of Heinrich Schliemann’s Life and Work, Eleftheria Daleziou talks to Dr. Natalia Vogeikoff-Brogan, Director of Archives at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, about the American School’s efforts to preserve Schliemann’s archive, and most importantly to make it accessible for online research.

Episode 2:  The Finds from Schliemann’s Excavations in the National Archaeological Museum

In his telegram to the Greek King George I in November 1876 Heinrich Schliemann wrote: “The treasure [the Mycenean finds] is sufficient enough to fill the rooms of a large museum, one that will be the most prominent in the world; a museum which will attract thousands of visitors to Greece for centuries to come, foreigners from all countries” («Ο θησαυρός ούτος αρκεί μόνος να πληρώση μέγα μουσείον, όπερ έσται το λαμπρότερον των επί του κόσμου, και όπερ καθ’ όλους τους επιόντας αιώνας θέλει ελκύσει εν Ελλάδι μυριάδας ξένων εκ πάσης χώρας»).

In this podcast, Eleftheria Daleziou discusses with Dr. Kostas Nikolentzos, Head of the Department of Prehistoric, Egyptian, and Anatolian Antiquities in the National Archaeological Museum, the finds from Mycenae in the largest museum of Greece, and the small collection of Trojan antiquities donated to the museum by Sophia Schliemann.

Episode 3:  From "Shared Custody" to "Full Rights"

In 1936, Heinrich Schliemann’s children, Andromache Melas and Agamemnon Schliemann, deposited the bulk of their father’s personal papers at the American School “on loan,” and on the condition that they would not be accessed without the family's permission.

In this podcast Eleftheria Daleziou has invited Dr. Stefanie Kennell, independent researcher with a strong commitment to Schliemann studies, to discuss the history of the custody of the Schliemann Papers since they first arrived at the American School in 1936.

Episode 4:  The Mycenae excavations: Heinrich Schliemann and Panayotis Stamatakis

The excavation of Mycenae by Heinrich Schliemann and the ensuing legendary discoveries in the 1870's have been discussed in numerous books and articles. The name of the Greek archaeologist who was assigned to supervise the excavation on behalf of the Greek state, Panayotis Stamatakis, went largely unacknowledged.

In this podcast, Eleftheria Daleziou has invited Dr. Dora Vassilikou, the author of the book The Chronicle of the Mycenean Excavations 1870-1878 (Το xρονικό της ανασκαφής των Μυκηνών 1870-1878) to discuss the crucial role of Stamatakis in the Mycenean discoveries.
